Nothing detracts from the excitement of the open road like learning at the rental desk that insurance fees have added hundreds of dollars to the bill.
Road trips are already significantly more expensive than at this time of last year, considering the price of gasoline, food, accommodation and car. The price of a car alone has increased 64% for rentals between April 7 and May 26 — to $81 a day on average — compared to the same journey in 2019, according to booking company Kayak. For the summer (May 27 to September 6), the average price is $101 per day, up 67% compared to the same period in 2019.
